For anyone who needs a KiCAD Footprint ST7789 Display Module, KiCAD Rookie created this footprint for KiCAD lovers to use and can be downloaded at the end of this article.

I recently discovered a low-cost 1.3" IPS TFT screen. Because of its small size, it has a very high resolution of 240x240 pixels and a very high pixel density. It is an IPS panel (InPlane Switching). These are higher-end LCD screens with better color reproduction and viewing angles than traditional TFT+TN/CSTN LCDs. That is why it is one of my favorite LCD displays.

It communicates with the microcontroller or SOC via the SPI Interface.

To communicate, standard SPI have four wires:

  1. MOSI -> Slave Out Master In
  2. MISO stands for Master In Slave Out.
  3. SCK = Serial Clock
  4. Chip Select/Slave Select (CS/SS)

The SPI bus supports multiple devices, and the active device is determined by pulling the chip select line LOW. The chip select line is not broken out to the headers on this module.
